Sophie Sainrapt and Emmanuelle Renard have an intimate understanding of each other’s practice. When they work on the same piece, each brings her own gestures, figures and colours, yet neither retains control of the composition. The work unfolds through a series of responses : one form calls forth another, a figure emerges from the background, a line contradicts and then extends the gesture that came before.
From this creative interplay, alive with energy and sensuality, emerges a shared creation, shaped by metamorphoses and chance, a third artistic language that can no more be attributed to one than to the other.
Two Artistic Worlds in Dialogue
Emmanuelle Renard paints with complete freedom, in a style that is both intensely untamed and luminous. In her enchanted world, permeated by plant, animal life and inhabited by strange figures, anything is possible. The pictorial matter seems perpetually in motion, life erupts with exuberance. Forms transform, come together or slip away, as though the painting were a world still taking shape, coursed, through by archaic forces.
Sophie Sainrapt has always placed the female body at the heart of her work. Her line, free and instantly recognisable, explores sensuality, desire and the vital force of life. Her figures assert themselves without undue restraint : they fully inhabit the space and boldly proclaim their freedom.
In Barroco, these two artistic languages meet without merging. Sophie Sainrapt’s bodies mingle with Emmanuelle Renard’s untamed worlds. The human enters into dialogue with the animal, plant life becomes flesh, and improbable creatures emerge in an explosion of colour.
Barroco : Baroque Reimagined
The exhibition’s title naturally evokes the Baroque, with its taste for movement, excess, metamorphosis and richly layered compositions. Yet, the artists offer neither a scholarly quotation nor a historical reconstruction. Rather, Barroco expresses a freedom taken with forms and conventions.
Nothing is entirely stable : figures transform, scales become blurred, and natural elements seem endowed with a life of their own. The grotesque stands alongside the sublime, unease encounters humour, and sensuality emerges at the heart of the fantastical.
Painted on paper, the works combine oil paint, ink, pastel and washes of water. Layers, erasures and revisions reveal the creative process. The surface retains the memory of the dialogue between the two artists : its moments of harmony, its tensions and its fortunate accidents.
A world of chimeras and metamorphoses
The exhibition draws visitors into a fertile world, inhabited by women, birds, mythical animals, foliage and forms that resist definition. Life overflows, giving rise to metamorphoses, unexpected encounters and, at times, delightful monsters..
This profusion, the brilliance of the colours and the exuberance of the compositions conjure a world in which the boundaries between species disappear. Transformation is less an accident than a principle of life.
