Contemporary painter and sculptor
Born in 1978 in Lithuania, Ruta Jusionyte lives and works in Provence and exhibits internationally. Both painter and sculptor, she develops a deeply dreamlike and mythological universe where human, animal and hybrid figures coexist, in a chromatic palette, dominated by ochres, ambers and vibrant hues. Her body of work is rooted in an intense exploration of the relationship to the living world.
The Dreamlike World of Ruta Jusionyte, between Humans and Animals
The question of coexistence lies at the heart of her practice. Not an idealized harmony, but a lucid acceptance of differences : between genders, between nature and culture, between humans and animals. Figures touch, embrace, and protect one another. Gestures are tender, bodies draw close.
Rabbits, hares, elephants, bears, horses, foxes, birds and mythological creatures, such as the Minotaur, inhabit her compositions. Each carries an ancient symbolic charge : desire, cunning, wisdom, fertility, vulnerability. These animals are not decorative metaphors, but companions in existence, mirrors of our own contradictions.
Through them, Ruta Jusionyte dismantles traditional oppositions : interior and exterior, home and landscape, instinct and reason. Open windows, boats, dining tables, arches and houses become spaces of transition, thresholds where fragile yet possible forms of symbiosis emerge.
A Body of Work shaped by time
Ruta Jusionyte’s work draws from ancient myths, notably that of Gaia, the primordial Earth Mother, while remaining deeply anchored in contemporary concerns. Climate change, health crises, forced displacement : her figures often appear as intimate refugees, seeking symbolic shelter on a damaged earth.
Her recent paintings show figures increasingly close to one another, as if collective vulnerability were calling for new gestures of solidarity. Her work offers a space to breathe, a quiet antidote to contemporary cynicism. It invites us to slow down, to contemplate the intrinsic dignity of every living being, and to reconnect with a form of active hope.
Ruta Jusionyte and the Retour De Voyage gallery
Ruta Jusionyte’s work speaks of passages, thresholds, and inner journeys. It explores a cultural and social biodiversity essential to our shared future. Today, her practice seems infused with a newfound serenity, a form of reconciliation, without naivety, with the world and with oneself.
It is therefore no coincidence that her encounter with Retour De Voyage happens now. it marks the beginning of a collaboration grounded in a shared vision : that of an art capable of connecting, soothing, and opening spaces for thought and meaning.
