The artists’ book as a creative Territory

Founded by Patricia Dupuy joined by Bernard Soria, private Editions of the Pale Fox consider the artists’ book as a work in its own right. More than a publishing house, they happily talk about nomadic bookstore : an independent, and mobile space, devoted to encounters between writers, artists and contemporary thinkers.

Each project becomes an artists' book where text, image and material interact with precision. Book-as-object, leporello, boxed edition, slipcase, or magnetic portfolio… : the form is never incidental. Every element is handcrafted. Paper choice, typography, binding, and presentation, are treated as essential components.

Here, a book is not merely read : it is handled, experienced, sometimes even collected with intention.

A Demanding Contemporary Bibliophilia

The Renard Pâle catalog is part of the field of contemporary bibliophily. Their editions are produced in limited runs, numbered and signed, enriched with original artistic interventions.

Major poets and writers from the contemporary literary scene engage in dialogue with established artists. Among them, in no exhaustive order, Jean CocteauMichel HouellebecqNancy HustonRégine Detambel orShmuel T. Meyer ; and on the artists’ side, Lucien ClergueGabriela MorawetzHans SilvesterJoel-Peter WitkinPierre Molinier, among others.

The aim is never to illustrate a text, but to create a shared territory where disciplines meet, interact and transform one another.

Structured into collections – Témenos, Sel que gemme, Sous le signe du soleil noir, Le Darhut… – theses editions explore poetry, sensuality, philosophical reflection and formal experimentation with deliberate freedom..

Creating Artist's books as a Labor of Pleasure

At Le Renard Pâle, rigor never excludes pleasure — quite the opposite. Each book seems to emerge from a challenge : an audacious binding technique, an unexpected format, an improbable encounter between two worlds that perhaps should never have crossed paths… and, yet, somehow, do.

Writers and artists discover books they might never have imagined themselves. Their work is revealed differently within them, shifted, reframed, sometimes intensified.

As for the pleasure of the art-minded reader or the seasoned collector… let us simply say it often begins with a glance , and rarely ends with a single book.

Le Renard Pâle & Retour De Voyage

Presenting Le Renard Pâle at the Retour de Voyage gallery, it is to defend a demanding conception of book as a stand-alone work of art.

The duo of “book visual artists” Patricia Dupuy and Bernard Soria offer editions aimed at collectors of artists’ books, contemporary bibliophiles and all those for whom the book remains a space of experimentation, reflection… and desire.
